How to make your home feel different of a weekend
With the majority of us at home 24/7 at the moment it can start to feel a little groundhog day can’t it? How can our homes help us transition from the chaos of working from home/home schooling/general life Monday – Friday to the different but equally chaotic business of a weekend?
Friday night big clean
Boring but a good tool! Once we close laptops and school books make sure they all go away for the weekend. Have a massive tidy up of paperwork, toys, games etc. Throw the hoover around and have a quick clean up of the house so it is all clean and fresh for you to relax in over the weekend.
Fragrances
Even though I’m at home, mid-week dinners still seems to be the same rushed affair as they always were, so spend the weekend learning new recipes, filling your home with different and wonderful smells.
I’ve recently taken up soap making – the constant handwashing has left my hands in need of a kinder cleanser! This new craft is something I save until the weekend so I can fill my house with the wonderful fragrances. I now instantly associate the smell of soap with a Sunday afternoon.
Table setting
Take the time on a Friday evening to set the dining/kitchen table ready for breakfast the next day. When you wake up on Saturday and sit down to your morning cuppa surrounded by a lovely table setting it will instantly feel different to a weekday morning. While you’re at it, set the table with your ‘best’ china to make it feel really special (I’m currently on a mission to #BringOutTheBest: if you have wonderful plates and cups use them, after all you deserve The Best everyday!)
Lighting
I’m not suggesting you change your lighting scheme every Friday night but there are simple things we can do to make our homes feel different. Try lighting your rooms with candlelight instead of your usual lamps, it instantly feels different and somehow special. You can also try complimenting your candlelit room with fairy lights, dig out the Christmas decorations box and get the house twinkling on a Saturday night.
Make the bed
Fresh clean linen always makes me feel happy and it’s surely got to be the quickest way of updating the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom. Make a point of putting on different sheets each weekend to give you a lift and a change from the mid-week routine.
