How much does an interior designer cost?

Most designers charge for their time by the hour, depending on the type of project and design studio you choose this could typically range anywhere between £50 - £500 per hour. Some designers may also charge on a fixed price basis such as £100 for help with one room etc.

How-ever the designer chooses to charge for their services you should always be given a quote for the work to be undertaken and a full breakdown of what to expect, that way you can factor in design costs to your budget at the start of your project.

Does an interior designer just pick paint colours?

A common misconception is that a designer helps you choose a wall colour and soft furnishings, whilst there is an element of this, it only forms a small part of the role a designer plays. Interior designers will work with your architects to ensure that the internal space works for you, they will also collaborate with trades, supply accurate detailed plans and ensure items required at first fix stage (lighting cables, plug sockets, built in storage, location of plumbing etc) are in the correct place to achieve the desired end result.

If all you notice at the end is the colour choices and cushions, then the designer has done a good job! All those other elements are planned and executed meticulously to make the space ‘just work’

What does an interior designer do?

An interior designer is employed to help plan an interior space which compliments the architecture and user’s activity within. The design process includes, concept design, space planning, lighting design, programming, research, site visits and build management whilst communicating with all parties to ensure full execution of the design on time and to budget

My project is only small, can I still use an interior designer?

Yes absolutely! In small spaces a designer can really help you to plan your space to ensure you maximise every meter to it’s fullest. Smaller/awkward spaces will often benefit from bespoke carpentry/furniture and this is where an interior designer can help visualise and plan this so you can then work with your trades to get a truly bespoke space.
