The Looking Glass was founded on our values of Quality, Accessibility and Sustainability.

When evaluating our sustainable principles, we consider economic, social and ecological impacts of our activities.

Guiding Principles

Economic:

Where possible we choose local, independent suppliers. This means we are ensuring financial resources are used in the areas we work in whilst highlighting the work of local makers, artisans, and tradespeople. To this end, we hope to contribute to the economic well-being at a local and national level.

Social:

In the main, we work with social housing providers, committed to providing good quality affordable housing in England. This is a deliberate choice; we believe passionately that everyone should have access to well-designed homes fit for purpose.

Ecological:

The impact we have on the environment as a business is an important consideration for us. By designing in a regenerative way, we will give clients the option to re-use inventory rather than always buying new, specifying recycled paint, and creating bespoke items that can easily be altered for reuse. By designing in this way, we seek to minimise the impact of our and our client’s waste stream on the environment.

We still have a lot more to do, not every design output will be carbon-neutral or fully climate-friendly, but every project is an opportunity for us to make real progress. We have made a commitment as a signatory of Design Declares! “a growing group of designers, design studios, agencies and institutions here to declare a climate and ecological emergency. As part of the global declaration movement, we commit to harnessing the tools of our industry to reimagine, rebuild and heal our world.” Using the Design Declares! Toolkit we are educating ourselves on methods of sustainable and regenerative design and measuring the environmental and social impact of each design to hold ourselves to account.

We are open to feedback and ideas so please get in touch if you have suggestions that can help us improve.
